Speak of the Devil! Not something we do much of in the world today but we should from time to time because he is the guy that can cause us a lot of trouble if are not aware that when we are filled with the Holy Spirit we become targets for his attention. Why? You ask. It is because we have potentially escaped his clutches, and that is something he would like to change.
Going back to the Garden of Eden Satan (AKA the Devil) stepped onto the world stage when he had a conversation with Eve.
1 Now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? 2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: 3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.
Of course Eve didn’t quite get the story right, but she also was easily deceived by the snake in the garden.
Genesis 3:4-6 4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: 5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. 6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.
And that was the cause of all the problems that followed for the next 6000 years.
One thing we should all remember, and remember well, is that Satan is not the cute little Disney cartoon character we see today. Satan is portrayed as relatively harmless and funny. However it would be well for us to know that he has been the one to convince the world to accept him like that to cover up his real character.
Satan has done an outstanding job of getting a large portion of the population of the world to not believe he even exists. He has shifted the blame for all the problems of the world off his shoulders and on to mankind’s shoulders.
John 8:44-45 44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. 45 And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not.
Jesus knew his real character and understood his real intentions and purpose.
Luke 4:2-13 2 And was there forty days tempted of the devil, and in those days he did eat nothing, but when they were ended, he afterward was hungry. 3 Then the devil said unto him, If thou be the son of God, command this stone, that it be made bread. 4 But Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread only, but by every word of God. 5 Then the devil took him up into an high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world, in the twinkling of an eye. 6 And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of those kingdoms: for that is delivered to me: and to whomsoever I will, I give it. 7 If thou therefore wilt worship me, they shall be all thine. 8 But Jesus answered him, and said, Hence from me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him alone thou shalt serve. 9 Then he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on a pinnacle of the Temple, and said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down from hence, 10 For it is written, That he will give his Angels charge over thee to keep thee: 11 And with their hands they shall lift thee up, lest at anytime thou shouldest dash thy foot against a stone. 12 And Jesus answered, and said unto him, It is said, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. 13 And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from him for a little season.
Satan’s problem was that he treated Jesus as a natural man, and not the son of God even though he knew who he really was. We see that he attempted to cause doubt in Jesus’ mind about who he was by saying to him “if you be the son of God”. Satan was asking Jesus to prove something he (Satan) already knew. Satan treats us the same way. Always trying to make us doubt who we are. We are the sons and daughters of the living God, and we should never forget that
7 Blessed is the man that trusteth in the Lord, and whose hope the Lord is. 8 For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit. 9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and — desperately wicked: who can know it? 10 I the Lord search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.
Man has a choice. To love God, or to love the material world ruled by Satan. That world includes greed, power, hatred, lust, etc.
Man, since shortly after the creation has been led down the path of Satan’s direction. Man has been fooled into thinking he knows best. This is not to say that man has not accomplished some amazing things, especially in the last 200 years of his existence. We can look at some of the greatest inventions ever, which are the product man’s ingenuity, but so many of those inventions have been turned into tools of destruction. Man is unable to live together on this planet without wanting someone else’s land, goods, materials, and people to use for his own benefit. We seems to be always at one another’s throats over some stupid and worthless offense.
Think how different the Bible tells us the new world will be without Satans influences.
Revelation 21:3-4 3 And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. 4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.
I have called this the return to Eden, but without the snake in the middle of the garden.
We have to be mindful of Satans method of operation.
1 Peter 5:6-10 6 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: (pride is the cause of most of our problems) 7 Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you. 8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: 9 Whom resist steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world. 10 But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, — make you perfect, establish, strengthen, settle you.
Satan is a quiet worker, but his results are extremely destructive. He has had almost 6000 years to perfect his methods. He camouflages himself and sneaks up on people to overtake them when they least expect it, and always attacks the weaknesses in the lives of those he targets. Just like a lion stalking it’s prey.
Revelation 12:7-9 7 And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, 8 And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven. 9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.
This is the cause of all the problems. Satan wanted to rule in Heaven in place of God. He wanted to sit on a throne that was higher than God’s throne and to have God serve him.
His pride and arrogance was his downfall, and he created nothing except chaos, mayhem death and disaster. There is nothing good in Satan. The world portrays Satan as a cartoon character, or something out of a fairy tale. That suits Satans purposes very well, and probably the architect of it all. The more people think that Satan is not real the better he likes it. It leaves him free to work his chaos without having to bother defending himself. As long as the world thinks that all the bad stuff that happens is just the natural order of things and has no spiritual cause the happier Satan is.
Revelation 12:12 Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabitants of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time.
We might not think of 6000 years a short time, but in God’s time it means nothing. Satan is not bound by time as we are, and to him it means his time is limited, which would be difficult when he had the opportunity to live forever as we will.
The Millennial Kingdom
1 And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. 2 And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years, 3 And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season. 4 And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshiped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.
Revelation 20:10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night forever and ever.
New Heavens and a New Earth
17 For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind.
The New Jerusalem
1 And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. 2 And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. 3 And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. 4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.
Resist the devil, and our reward is eternal life. Satan has his reward as we see above, and we want no part of that.
